The study programme has a thematic structure and, because students are divided into small groups, there is sufficient room for discussion and intensive study guidance. In addition, students follow a number of related lectures and tutorials, together with students from other study programmes. The students are in charge of various integral projects in and outside the Theaterschool. You will outline a personal development plan that grows increasingly more detailed during the course of the study programme.
Thematic teaching
The thematic teaching given during the first year is confined mostly to the student’s own study programme. In the second year there is regular collaboration with students from other Theaterschool study programmes.
Lectures and tutorials
Some of the subjects in the first and second year are offered in the form of lectures and tutorials, sometimes with students from other study courses. A number of them are components of thematic teaching, others have a relatively independent status. Homework and assignments must be integrated as far as possible in thematic teaching.
Integral projects
In the Theaterschool students can work together on assignments with regard to theatre or design, or an interaction of both, in presentations and productions.
Working visits and study tours
There are working visits to all kinds of performing arts and theatres. You not only attend productions but also look around backstage to form an impression of, for example, stage scenery construction or the quality of the costume studios. Furthermore, as part of the study programme, the students make a study tour to a major city in Europe like London or Berlin.
Guest lectures
It’s location in Amsterdam along with its widespread network of contacts means the Theaterschool is often host to impromptu visits by well-known designers and theatre makers. This may result in a guest lecture or (individual) work discussions.
Besides its contacts within the Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten, the study programme also maintains close ties with professional designers, theatres and study courses in Holland and abroad. Among others, there is a collaborative programme with the renowned
Central School of Speech and Drama (CSSD) in London.
