Scenography

Artistic director: Peter de Kimpe

A theatre spectacle does not stand by itself, it relies on movement, dynamics and transitions. The designer responsible for this, does not work exclusively in space but also in time, he operates in a discipline with four dimensions.

In many cases a designer works together with a director or choreographer starting from a concept he/she has developed, inspired by a text or idea. The designer has a specific talent for perceiving the underlying intentions, looking beyond a straight answer to the literal request of a director or choreographer. The designer thereby takes on the role of an authentic expressive influence during the process of developing and realizing a concept. He/she is, ideally said, ten steps ahead in visualizing a concept, sees what is needed and understands the essence of what a director or choreographer is searching for.

For the Scenography study programme therefore, a designer is someone with clear personal views, who with his/her artistic insight and broad  expertise is capable of collaborating with other members of an artistic team to develop a design concept while also supervising and directing its execution. A design here is not seen as a sum of separate parts; in essence it is about image effectiveness and the structuring of content.

Flash is required! Musicians of the Ligeti Academy, part of the Asko Schönberg Ensemble, play three compositions by Michael Gordon. Third year students of the Scenography study programme designed the stage. The concert will take place on Monday 3 May 2010 in Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ.
