Study Programme

Students enter the school with their own ‘blood group’. Some feel attracted to text-based theatre. Others have a greater affinity with contemporary music theatre. Still others see themselves more as performer/entertainer than as actor of stage repertoire. The school regards the idea of ‘blood groups’ seriously. Even so, the education given during the first two years is practically the same for all students. Experience has taught us that broadening the range of learning in the first years benefits the ultimate chosen specialization and its depth. In other words :  a text-orientated actor who during the basis of his/her study becomes aware of contemporary music theatre and theatre making , will develop into a many facetted and independently minded text-based actor . The musical performer who is well-grounded in theatre and who has read widely, promises to be a more interesting theatre singer or cabaret artist.
If you look at contemporary developments in theatre you’ll notice that in many leading theatre productions – whether in essence, theatre or contemporary music theatre –  a fusion of multiple disciplines and genres occur.
With our education programme we anticipate these developments without blunting or diluting the original ‘bloodgroup’. On the contrary…

The first two years are grounding years, in which the student follows compulsory subjects, training and projects, that together must form the basis of craftsmanship, artistic development and professional insight . Included are acting, music, movement, song, voice, theory, text writing, composition and programme making. In addition, students will act in small, self-created productions and in one project led by a director.

During the third year, lessons will be more specialized and tailor-made. Text-based theatre and contemporary music theatre are the two specializations. The student  can develop himself/herself to become an actor of modern and classic stage repertoire or as actor for contemporary music theatre and theatre entertainment . Third-year students who show evident talent as a stage artist/maker can also specialize in creating and performing  their own work (from drama to cabaret and theatre entertainment).
An outside school internship and graduation projects are scheduled for the final year of the study programme.

The School for Drama & Contemporary Music Theatre works closely with the other study programmes of de Theaterschool, in particular with the Regie Opleiding  (Theatre Direction study programme)

In specific cases it’s possible to continue with the master course Theaterzanger/Singerperformer after completing the bachelor study programme.

Note: the study programme of the School for Drama & Contemporary Music Theatre  is given in Dutch. Foreign students must have adequate oral and written command of the Dutch language.
