School for Drama & Contemporary Music Theatre

Artistic director: Ruut Weissman

The Amsterdam Theatre School that originated in 1874 and the Academy for Music Theatre, founded in 1960 were merged in 2001 to form one institute:
The School for Drama & Contemporary Music Theatre

The School for Drama & Contemporary Music Theatre trains students to become:
•    actors trained in classic and modern stage repertoire
•    contemporary music theatre actors
•    stage artists/creator of own work (from drama to cabaret and theatre entertainment)

Young people with talent, a genuine interest and a wish to study text-based theatre or contemporary music theatre and who – in some cases – want to expand their talents as stage artist/performer of own work,  can optimally develop themselves at the School for Drama & Contemporary Music Theatre.
The curriculum offers a well-balanced broad technical, practical and artistic basis. The teaching staff comprise a variety of highly qualified theatre pedagogues and leading artists from the professional  field. Moreover, the school is situated at the dynamic, cultural heart of The Netherlands.
By providing the student with different techniques, know-how, craftsmanship, artistic insight, taste and personal political commitment , their ability and motivation are transformed into talent. Talent that distinguishes itself in the professional field as original, independent and energetically pursuing   its own path.

The School for Drama & Contemporary Music Theatre turns out politically committed actors and cabaret artists with style, taste, personality, craftsmanship and vision. Graduates have a sturdy basis that enables them to work professionally with a large theatre group or production company. Ex-students also find employment in various forms of contemporary music theatre. Some form their own stage or cabaret company.
