Dance teacher

Artistic leader: Jopie de Groot

The Bachelor Dance in Education programme is a 4-year full-time study of higher professional education (hbo). The study consists of a preliminary year and a 3-year main phase concluding with a year of teaching practice. Course graduates obtain a postgraduate teaching diploma qualifying them to teach dance in the field as well as in primary and secondary schools.

It is a broadly oriented study focusing on three main points: dancing, teaching and dance making. The development of dance technique as well as educational abilities and the creative and personality-shaping qualities of the students has an important role in the programme. In addition students build up theatre experience by making and participating in performances.

A dance teacher must possess a number of qualities. He or she is skilled as a dancer, in the teaching and guidance of students, in the developing of amateur performances and is able to function well in a team. An additional fact is that the future graduate is a bridgebuilder between different cultures and knows how to approach them and can make necessary fusions and cross-overs. Each area of work within the field places separate demands on a teacher such as the ability to work with groups at different levels. Dance teachers find employment in schools for amateur ballet, music schools, centres for art studies, educational dance groups and at primary and secondary schools.

The study is directly linked with this broad field by the fact that most of our teachers are active in the professional and/or amateur dance world. The increase in the number of amateur dance festivals and dance making within different cultures bear witness to the current development in the amateur dance field. Trends in the field are continuously being incorporated into the curriculum.
